Ok, so a reel popped up on my feed recently making fun of people who still use wired earphones. And surprise surprise…. I'm one of those people Here's why - I'm not here to tell you to throw your AirPods in the trash. But I AM here to tell you that the "they're totally safe" crowd is way more confident than the science actually allows them to be right now. What AirPods actually emitLike all wireless devices, AirPods emit radiofrequency (RF) radiation - the same category as Wi-Fi routers and cell phones. Yes, it’s non-ionizing (so it’s not like Xrays). But non-ionizing doesn't automatically mean it’s totally safe! The specific concern with AirPods is proximity. You're putting them directly in your ear canal, right next to brain tissue, often for hours at a time. That's a different exposure pattern than, for example, your laptop sitting a few feet away from you. What the research actually saysA 2025 Yale study found that RF radiation at Bluetooth frequency - at levels 4,000x LOWER than FCC limits - interfered with neurodevelopment and increased expression of autism-related genes in fetal brain models. A 2024 study of 600 people found that using Bluetooth headsets 3+ hours a day was associated with higher rates of thyroid nodules. Some researchers have also flagged that AirPods use a magnetic induction field that literally passes through your brain tissue to communicate between the two buds. And that low-level RF exposure at similar frequencies may open the blood-brain barrier. So even though it’s not clear that the AirPods are definitely causing harm…. it’s also true that "not proven harmful yet" and "proven safe" are very different things. The WHO and IARC currently classify RF radiation as a "possible carcinogen." It means there's enough data to take it seriously, but not enough to call it conclusive. The reality to think aboutAirPods have only been mainstream since ~2016. Less than a decade of widespread daily use - often 6, 8, 10 hours a day - sitting directly next to the brain. We don't have the long-term data yet. And historically, "we'll figure it out later" has a pretty bad track record... Doctors endorsed cigarettes into the 1950s while the tobacco industry funded "safety" studies. In that same era, low-dose radiation was considered safe for pregnant women - until the childhood leukemia data came in. BPA was in baby bottles for decades while researchers raised flags. DES (synthetic estrogen prescribed to prevent miscarriage) was given to pregnant women for 30 years... until they realized that's why cancers showed up in their daughters. Many of these are continuous, cumulative and close to sensitive tissue - just like RF exposure. For me, this is a situation to follow the precautionary principle. What I actually doI’ve actually never used Bluetooth earphones (gasp!) - I’m perfectly happy with my wired earphones that don’t run out of battery, are hard to lose, and are super comfortable. If you’re attached to your AirPods, here are few easy things to try:
To summarize…I'm not anti-technology - I'm just pro-not-being-a-guinea-pig when there are easy alternatives and the research is still catching up. Especially for kids, pregnant women, and anyone wearing them 6+ hours a day. In health, -Daina Forward this email to anyone who would benefit 💌 Forwarded this email? I had a client ask me what the difference is between probiotics and prebiotics - so let’s talk about it! Many people are popping a probiotic pill every day , and not really thinking much more about it. But here's what's actually happening inside your gut - your probiotic doesn't have much to work with if you're not feeding it. That's where PREbiotics come in. And nope, a trendy soda with "prebiotic fiber" on the label doesn't count (keep reading to learn more…). What's the difference,...
Last weekend, we flew to Boise for a family wedding - so fun! Being 7.5 months pregnant at a wedding is a whole new experience and I’m into it. We danced, we celebrated, we went to a bar (!), and I felt AMAZING the next morning. We stayed at an Airbnb, and were on a mission from the second we walked in… It was one of those places where the "fresh" smell of synthetic fragrances was intense. We went room to room hunting down every wall plug-in and reed diffuser we could find, placed them all...
Here’s some practical stuff I've tested in real life and have loved using! Large stone dish drying mat Ok, I have to start with this one because it's my favorite new thing in our home right now. I was so over dish towels - especially after one too many moldy ones - and those synthetic pads are gross too. And traditional drying racks always end up slimy. This stone mat has been used heavily for five months and I'm still loving it! It looks sleek on the counter, drains fast, dries fast, and...
