If you're doing all the things to balance your hormones but haven't considered your gut, you're missing a HUGE piece of the puzzle. Hormone health and gut health are deeply connected, and if your gut is out of balance, so are your hormones. Your gut does more than digest food - it acts like an endocrine gland, producing and regulating hormones like insulin, ghrelin, and even estrogen. It also plays a major role in detoxifying and eliminating used hormones so they don’t recirculate and cause imbalance. If your gut bacteria are off (aka dysbiosis), this entire process can get disrupted, leading to hormone symptoms like:
How Dysbiosis Disrupts Your HormonesYour gut bacteria help break down and eliminate estrogen through a process called glucuronidation. But when there's an overgrowth of the wrong bacteria, an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase can reactivate estrogen, sending it back into circulation. This can contribute to estrogen dominance, which is linked to symptoms like heavy periods, bloating, and hormonal acne for women. This is also why many women struggling with PCOS, endometriosis, or thyroid imbalances often have underlying gut issues. If you don’t address dysbiosis, hormone-balancing strategies (like seed cycling, adaptogens, or hormone-friendly workouts, etc.) might only get you so far. How to Support Your Gut for Better Hormone BalanceHere's the good news: you can rebalance the gut through diet and lifestyle shifts that support a diverse microbiome. Here’s where to start: ✔️ Increase plant diversity: Aim for 30+ different plant foods per week (veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices) to feed a variety of beneficial bacteria. ✔️ Prioritize fiber: Prebiotic fibers (found in foods like onions, garlic, artichokes, and flaxseeds) feed the good bacteria that support hormone health. ✔️ Support liver detox: Your liver processes and eliminates hormones, and it depends on your gut to finish the job. Cruciferous veggies (broccoli, kale, cabbage) and sulfur-rich foods (onions, garlic, eggs) help with this. ✔️ Check for dysbiosis: If you suspect gut issues are disrupting your hormones, functional lab testing (like the GI-MAP stool test) can reveal imbalances and guide a targeted plan to restore gut health. Even though the IDEA of drinking enough water should be simple… in the middle of a busy day, it’s easy to forget. It feels a lot easier (and more fun) to stay hydrated when you have a water bottle you actually want to carry around. Investing in a good-quality water bottle - or even just keeping a 32oz mason jar nearby - makes a huge difference. It helps you keep track of your intake and makes sipping throughout the day more intuitive. (Bonus: you won’t be scrambling to refill your glass every...

We hear it all the time: Balance your blood sugar…. Avoid huge blood sugar spikes… But what does that actually mean?! And why does it matter beyond the usual mentions of weight gain and energy crashes? Blood sugar imbalances don’t just make you hangry - they set the stage for poor gut health, skin issues, fatigue, stubborn weight, and even accelerated aging. And here’s the kicker: if blood sugar is dysregulated long enough, it increases your risk for chronic disease. Let’s break it down....
