The habits behind "unicorn" toxin results

Last week I shared the Total Tox results from my unicorn husband - super low mycotoxins, heavy metals, and environmental chemicals. In case you missed it, here's the full post.

This week I want to talk about what we actually DO in our daily lives that supports those results… because clean labs require work!

These are habits we've built over years, and they're the same strategies I end up working through with clients when toxin burden comes up on their labs.

Everyone's starting point will be a little different depending on what shows up:

  • If mycotoxins are elevated, assessing the home for mold and getting an air filter in place are absolutely non-negotiable first steps.
  • If heavy metals come up, we want to dig into the most likely sources - think cookware, water quality, dental amalgams, high-frequency seafood consumption, or work exposures - and start there before doing anything else.
  • If environmental chemicals are elevated, we want to understand how and where exposure is happening and work on reducing it.

How do you know if toxins might be playing a role?

You might think it's not a big deal and that we're resilient as humans… but here are some of the common symptoms my clients struggle with that make me suspect a toxin burden:

Skin

  • Cystic acne, especially painful and slow to heal
  • Acne on the back and body (fungal connection)
  • Skin that doesn't respond to topicals or conventional treatments
  • Rashes, itchy or sensitive skin
  • Skin that flares after eating certain foods

Digestion

  • Chronic constipation or alternating constipation and diarrhea
  • Bloating and gas, especially after meals
  • Sluggish digestion, feeling full for a long time after eating
  • Food sensitivities that seem to multiply over time
  • Nausea, especially with fatty foods

Hormones

  • Irregular, heavy, or painful periods
  • PMS or PMDD
  • Estrogen dominance symptoms (mood swings, breast tenderness, weight gain around hips)
  • Stubborn weight that won't budge despite doing everything right
  • Blood sugar swings, sugar cravings

Fertility

  • Difficulty conceiving
  • Recurrent miscarriage
  • Low progesterone
  • Endometriosis or PCOS

Energy & Brain

  • Fatigue that doesn't improve with rest
  • Brain fog, poor focus, forgetfulness
  • Mood instability, anxiety, irritability

General

  • Feeling like nothing works despite doing all the right things
  • Symptoms that keep coming back after protocols

What we focus on in our home

Here's everything we've layered in over the years and what I would share with clients - so you can see how much intentional work goes into avoiding toxicity.

Air

  • Air filter running consistently, plus keeping indoor humidity in the optimal range (mold LOVES moisture)
  • Regular walkthroughs of the home checking for moisture traps - under sinks, around windows, basements, bathrooms
  • If mold IS found - get out or remediate

Water

  • High quality filtration - we used a Berkey for years and switched to an under-sink reverse osmosis system (AquaTru) for convenience (here's some more info about tap water quality)
  • Remineralizing after RO, since it strips minerals along with the bad stuff
  • Supplementing with natural spring water or structured water
  • Other mineral-rich drinks throughout the day (e.g. herbal teas, coconut water)

Diet

  • 85%+ whole foods based
  • Eating enough calories and protein - under-eating tanks your detox capacity
  • Anti-inflammatory, with variety, seasonality, and mineral content in mind

Lifestyle

  • 45+ minutes of sunshine daily, 90 minutes or more is the goal
  • Consistent sleep hygiene
  • Community, relationships, joy, fulfillment in career - these matter more than most people realize for detox capacity

Drainage & Detox Support

  • Lymph movement
  • Red light therapy
  • Deep breathing
  • Acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage

Nervous System Regulation

  • This one is SUPER important - especially if you're actively on a detox protocol, but ideally before you even start
  • We keep it simple with meditation and time in nature, but there are SO many options… MBSR, somatic release, EMDR, talk therapy, nervous system programs, free YouTube videos
  • More advanced options like neurofeedback, biofield tuning, and accelerated EMDR exist too if you want to go deeper

Reducing Toxin Exposure

  • Air, water, food, and soil
  • Cooking equipment and food storage
  • WiFi, blue light, and EMF exposure
  • Household cleaning products
  • Beauty and makeup products
  • Garden and yard products

None of this has to be done all at once - actually, trying to do it all at once is a great way to burn out and do none of it 🥲

The goal is progress, not perfection, and when I work with clients, we figure out what YOUR results are telling us and prioritize from there.

In health,

-Daina

P.S. I'll be popping out on maternity leave soon (crazy!), but I plan to be back in Fall 2026. In case that little voice in your head is saying you have a feeling there might be a bigger issue affecting your health, make sure to reach out in a few months so I can help you!

I recently completed a continuing education toxin training that really changed how I see a LOT of what's happening with my clients. We went deep into lab interpretation, detox protocol sequencing, and how to navigate complex cases… and I came out of it feeling SO much more prepared to actually help people who have tried it all. For some clients, "eat more protein and drink more water" can work wonders - but for most people who come to me, we need to dig SO much deeper. How do you know if...

I had a client ask me what the difference is between probiotics and prebiotics - so let’s talk about it! Many people are popping a probiotic pill every day , and not really thinking much more about it. But here's what's actually happening inside your gut - your probiotic doesn't have much to work with if you're not feeding it. That's where PREbiotics come in. And nope, a trendy soda with "prebiotic fiber" on the label doesn't count (keep reading to learn more…). What's the difference,...

Ok, so a reel popped up on my feed recently making fun of people who still use wired earphones. And surprise surprise…. I'm one of those people Here's why - I'm not here to tell you to throw your AirPods in the trash. But I AM here to tell you that the "they're totally safe" crowd is way more confident than the science actually allows them to be right now. What AirPods actually emit Like all wireless devices, AirPods emit radiofrequency (RF) radiation - the same category as Wi-Fi routers and...
